  • Ghost Ranch Chimney Rock Trail

Posted at 1:25 pm by NativeNM, on April 19, 2024

It was just a year ago, almost to the day that we visited Ghost Ranch and hiked up to the top of Kitchen Mesa Trail. There are many trails to hike in and around Ghost Ranch, a place that Joe and I love so much. We plan to come back and explore more hiking trails any chance we get. This time we chose one of the more popular trails, Chimney Rock Trail which is about 3 miles out and back. It’s an uphill hike which can be a challenge but take your time, gather your breath, take lots of pictures, always bring an energy bar and enjoy the view. We had perfect hiking weather with full sunshine, a slight breeze with the temperature just about 60 degrees. There were many other hikers of all ages enjoying the day as well. It’s always a sign of Spring when you see so many people enjoying a hiking trail with their family this time of year. No matter your age, try to get outdoors and enjoy nature around you. It fills your soul and will inspire you to explore more places that make you happy.

As we start the trail there are several hikers ahead of us with Chimney Rock in the distance. It doesn’t look that far but it’s a steady incline which gave our lungs a workout.

A little further up the trail I looked back to see a couple more hikers behind us.

As we climb higher the landscape appears to open up in front of us.

Looking across the canyon you can see Kitchen Mesa. I will always remember the feeling after hiking Kitchen Mesa, it was an extraordinary experience!

This is where we’re headed, the final push to get as close to Chimney Rock as we can.

    A perfect tree sculpture.

Joe made it to the top which means I’m not far behind.

We made it, now it’s time to take it all in and enjoy everything around us.

This is as close as we could get to Chimney Rock. The white layer in front of me is the edge of this cliff. I am always careful not to go too far and make sure my feet are firmly planted before I start taking photos.

Here are some photos from up above.

From this view you can see the ranch below. You can visit Ghost Ranch by purchasing a day pass at the Welcome Center or book a stay including lodging or camping with an RV or tent. While you are here you can book a walking tour or horseback riding. They have various art workshops that you can sign up for as well. There is also an Anthropology and Paleontology museum on site.

Based on the map that was given to us at the Welcome Center I believe this is Georgia O’Keeffe’s home.

    Time to start heading back.

I hope you enjoyed tagging along with us to Ghost Ranch and Chimney Rock.

I would never get close enough to the edge to get the photos you did. 😊

I used to be afraid of heights but over time I’ve discovered how much I love the view from up high. I am careful though!
