    • Lemon Pomegranate Sorbet

      Wow, where does the time go? Memorial weekend is upon us which signals the beginning of summer grilling, festive salads and frozen treats. This weekend I’m smoking a whole chicken, roasting vegetables and topping it off with frozen sorbet for dessert. This sorbet is easily made with lemon juice, pomegranate juice and simple syrup, that’s it. It’s tart and refreshing but has a multitude of benefits. Lemon helps with immunity, aids in digestion and provides Vitamin C which reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease. And Pomegranate juice is high in antioxidants and nutrients that may help with inflammation and urinary health. Once you mix the juices with the simple syrup, pour it into an ice cream maker to freeze or pour into popsicle molds which are also fun to eat, just ask my husband!

    • Honey Pistachio Ice Cream

      I’ve been craving homemade ice cream, specifically something sweet and salty. After some thought I went with salted pistachios blended with honey vanilla ice cream. The sweet and salty flavors in this ice cream will tempt your taste buds. I had some leftover red and green chile pistachios that Joe and I experimented with as a spicy topper. Both flavors had a subtle spiciness but wasn’t overwhelming to the overall taste. The ice cream is a vanilla base but I replaced part of the sugar with honey. The honey gave it a distinct flavor that tasted unique. If you enjoy sweet and salty flavors, honey pistachio ice cream might be just for you!

    • Lemon Blueberry Sweet Rolls

      It’s that time of year again when I get a craving for sweet rolls. It must be the holidays, the chill in the air and a hot drink that make me desire them so much. I like to make them up ahead and freeze individually so that I can pull one out every so often. I love them with my morning coffee, afternoon tea or generally anytime, which is why I have to put them out of sight in the freezer or I might be tempted to have one every day. This years flavor is lemon blueberry, it’s not overly sweet but has a wonderful blueberry flavor with a citrusy lemon glaze. These two flavors just belong together. And the brioche dough is so light and tender, it practically melts in your mouth.

      The first time I ever tasted a Cinnamon Brioche Cruffin was during our Wyoming vacation in September. Persephone’s Bakery in Jackson Hole serves up some of the best pastries you will find anywhere. On our Wyoming holiday we started each day at Persephone’s Westbank to have breakfast with Joe having a savory breakfast with eggs and I with a pastry and coffee. My favorite thing was the Cinnamon Brioche and I vowed that one day I would recreate it. I had no idea how much work goes into making this irresistible flaky dough but it was so worth it. The outside layer is crisp with buttery layers rolled up together with cinnamon sugar. It’s one of the most delicious pastries I’ve ever tasted and one of my biggest accomplishments if I do say so myself!

    • Lemon Lavender Sorbet

      I don’t know about you all but it’s been a particularly hot month of June here in New Mexico. As we head into July we are finally seeing some cooler temps which is a welcome relief. I’ve been looking for something cool and slushy to make and sorbet just seemed like the perfect treat. This lemon sorbet is so refreshing with a little hint of lavender in the back end. It’s a light dessert that is cool and slushy leaving your taste buds wanting more. Sorbet is my summer go to when the heat of the summer kicks in. And most sorbet recipes can be poured into popsicle molds that are kid friendly. So no excuses, make lemon sorbet and if you can find culinary lavender, sprinkle some into the mix for the most tasty and refreshing treat this summer.

    • Simple Crepes for Sweet or Savory Fillings

      As I was making the Blueberry Lavender Jam, I couldn’t think of anything better than to pair them with crepes. It’s been awhile since I’ve made crepes and thought to myself “what better time than now”. These crepes are so versatile and can be filled with sweet jam, cream cheese, or sprinkled with sugar. But as good as sweet crepes are, they are equally delicious with savory fillings. Crepes are so easy to make, the batter is quickly made in a blender and then swirled in a non-stick skillet with melted butter. Crepes are light but hold their shape and appear as if they are lace doilies on a plate. The crisp edges are my favorite part especially when they are freshly made. I’m including a recipe for Chicken Enchilada Crepes for a savory filling that you might enjoy. The filling includes chicken, cheese and a green chile bechamel sauce. It’s topped with the remaining cheese and bechamel sauce and then heated until it’s bubbling hot. It was a delicious savory meal that Joe and I enjoyed immensely. Crepes are so versatile for sweet or savory fillings, or even to enjoy with a sprinkle of sugar.

    • Blueberry Lavender Jam

      It’s almost lavender season here in New Mexico. Normally there would be lavender festivals at Los Poblanos Farms in Albuquerque and at Purple Adobe Lavender Farm in Abiquiu over the next few week; however they will be cancelled for a second year in a row due to Covid. Luckily I live close to Los Poblanos which includes the Los Poblanos Historic Inn, Hacienda Spa and CAMPO restaurant that uses their own harvest vegetables to make up their menu. They also have a farm shop with a bakery and many lavender products including culinary lavender and lavender honey. And they make lavender lotions, soap and hand sanitizers plus many more items. Our first lavender festival experience was just after our move back to New Mexico. We went to the Purple Adobe Lavender Festival near Abiquiu. We had a wonderful time and would encourage anyone who has a chance to visit next year in late June or first of July to please check out these wonderful festivals. Earlier in the week I visited the farm shop and picked up some lavender and honey to make Blueberry Lavender Jam. It was a wonderful combination of slightly sweet blueberries with a hint of lavender flowers in the background.

      May is truly my favorite time of year. The warm sunshine makes me feel so good being outdoors and enjoying nature. Whether it’s going for a walk or watching the roadrunners and quail stop by to feed in our backyard, it’s the simple things that make me happy. This month has gone by way too quickly and now the Memorial holiday is upon us signaling that summer is just around the corner. I hope you all have a festive weekend and enjoy your time relaxing with family, friends or nature. I’ve been craving something cherry and decided to make some Cherry Cheesecake Bars for the weekend. What a great dessert to cap off the weekend! It’s easy to make and a crowd pleaser for any get together!

    • Cranberry Orange Sweet Rolls

      One of my favorite combinations is cranberry and orange.  Let’s face it, these two just belong together, whether it’s scones, muffins, cranberry sauce or cranberry relish.  Cranberries are in season now so if you love this tarty fruit you might want to pick up a bag or two and put in the freezer.  I started freezing them so that I had some to cook with all year long.  I prefer fresh or frozen berries to dried cranberries plus they don’t have the added sugar that dried cranberries do.  Along with antioxidants, they provide many vitamins and minerals that we all need in our daily diet.  I must confess, sweet rolls probably negate all the positives of eating cranberries but after the year we’ve had I’m going to give myself a break and indulge in a few rolls.  The rest can be frozen for up to a couple month’s.  I like to freeze 2 rolls per package and that way I can have a sweet roll now and then.   These rolls are messy and don’t look as perfect as some of my other sweet rolls but the taste is among the best.  For me it always starts with brioche dough, I never waver with any other dough, it’s just that good.  The cranberry orange jam was adapted from “Plated Cravings”.  I had an idea of what the filling should be and this recipe was about as perfect as I could have imagined.  And if that’s not enough I made an orange glaze that soaked into every crack and crevice of these rolls.  I hope you’ll keep these in mind next time you are craving sweet rolls.  They have a festive feel for the holidays but I think they would be perfect any time of year.

    • Fresh Lime Popsicles

      Have you guys been experiencing this heat wave?  It’s been in the mid 90’s to over 100 degrees for what seems like a couple weeks now.   It may be dry heat here in the Southwest but unless there is a breeze blowing by it’s just hot air.  So instead of turning on the oven we’ve been grilling and making salads or simple sandwiches to beat the heat.  We needed something cold for a boost of energy so I made popsicles.  They are a welcome treat from the afternoon heat.  I’d forgotten how easy they are to make with simple syrup, lime juice, lime zest and a little bit of alcohol that gives them that soft slushy texture.  Refreshing is the best word to describe them and they taste even better than those frozen fruit bars you buy at the store. I used to make these for the kids but I think Joe and I enjoy them just as much!
